Real Wedding: Sharonda & Markis - Mission Inn Resort.

We love planning weddings and we love couples that want to plan a unique experience for their guests.  So was the case with our Summer 2011 couple, Sharonda and Markis! They were home for Christmas shortly after their December engagement and contacted us about planning their summer fete for 400 guests.  With budget in hand we set out to plan a great wedding and experience that would fit the taste and high expectation for this National Marketing Manager and National Logistics Manager.

Sharonda and Markis are known for the parties they have thrown.  From the onset the bar was set pretty high as to what guests would expect.  A meticulous attention to detail is always a part of our planning process here at Joie de Vie so when we sat down to make decisions on design, aesthetic and experience for their wedding...it was pretty much decided: Go Big or Go Home!

From the save the date to the invitation, the tone was set and guests excitedly waited for July 30th to arrive.  Below are a few images from their wedding day:

Guests received a saved the date in February that resembled the cover of Jet Magazine.  At the end of May 225 silk pad folio invitations were sent out in lovely silver boxes to formally invite guests to The Mission Inn Resort & Spa for an unforgettable weekend.

The bride's first dress was a beautiful Maggie Sottero gown that she purchased in Maryland.  As we got closer to the wedding day, Sharonda found yet another dress that would be the perfect touch for the reception.

It had to be one of the hottest days in summer!  400 guests looked on as the couple exchange vows in Plaza De La Fontana.

With 400 guests, we worked closely with the sales and catering department at the Mission Inn.  Our couple fell in love with the privacy afforded by the Mission Inn.  We had ceremony outside in the Plaza, cocktail hour in the courtyard area and dinner in the grand ballroom.  Cindy's Creations created beautiful florals within the Persian Plum and Apple Slice palate selected by the couple. Over The Top custom made napkins, linens and chair ties for the entire event.
The cake was designed to resemble the brides ceremony gown.  The couple cut their cake at the end of dinner and guests were invited to the after party room where the cake was served along with other wonderful desserts prepared by The Sugar Suite.

Did we mention there were 64 people in the bridal party?  Yes...64!  Below are 40 of the members in the party.

Elegante Films delivered a great cinematic recap of the day:

We worked with a fantastic team of wedding professionals to ensure EVERY detail for this wedding was unforgettable!  Our team of pros:

Remembering September 11th!

Eleven years have gone by, but it still feels like yesterday!  Today we remember the many heroes and innocent lives lost on  Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

I was still working as a Benefits Consultant and was working in Naples, FL. I for one believe everything in life happens for a reason. Our client was a chain of hotels in Boca Raton and Naples. The clients' Health Insurance Company representative was in Naples instead of the World Trade Center that day because our benefits enrollment was delayed two weeks. His colleague took over his New York schedule that day - an assignment in the World Trade Center. Minutes before the plane struck he realized he had no cash and stepped out of the building to get cash from a nearby bank. That need for cash caused him to not be inside the building when the first plane struck at 8:45 a.m. Just the same, a fellow School of Business Industry graduate walked in for her first day of work in one of the Towers - she was fortunate enough to make it out unharmed. The stories of those who woke up late, got stuck in traffic, decided to call in sick could go on and on...yet sadly many did not have that story to tell.

Many lost their lives that day. Many became heroes that day. They are gone but definitely not forgotten. I've learned that no one is promised tomorrow: We must live, love and enjoy each day with purpose and with no regrets. We must also learn to cherish our family, our friends and our loved ones. Life is too short and quite unpredictable! Let's remember how important we are to each other!

Real Wedding: Joane and Miller - The Estate of John's Lake

Plan a wedding in less than six weeks? Yes we can!

Meet Joane and Miller one of our Spring 2012 couples. We were given the challenge of pulling together a wedding for 60 guests at one of Orlando's newest wedding locales, The Estate of John's Lake! The Estate of Johns Lake has historic roots back as far as 1928. It sits on a sprawling 18 acres surrounded by beautiful oak trees, it's own resident Clydesdale horses, a race horse and beautiful John's Lake! The estate house is perfect for ceremonies and receptions.

This wedding was particularly near and dear as the bride is my niece! The pressure of planning only intensifies when it is a close friend or family member. With the help of an amazing team of wedding professionals we were able to plan the wedding for the bride and groom (who were both overseas) in a small window of time. Below are a few detail shots of the reception space.

We chose Navy, Green and Sedona as our color palette.  Jennifer with Over the Top Linens helped us select linens to match the locale.  Over the Top created two custom linens for our cake table and sweetheart table. We paired that with square tables and gold chiavari's from A Chair Affair.
The ceremony took place at a local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.  Guests were pleasantly surprised as they drove up to the private estate house.  Once the sun set, the beautiful custom lighting from Tagas Events, really set the tone for the reception.

Jennyfer with the Sugar Suite, captured the essence of the night by designing a simple but very elegant cake with custom flowers to match our color palette.

The invitations, which were in French, set the tone for the invited guests.

The day came together in part because of some amazing professionals:
Coordinator: Joie de Vie Weddings – Kerline Docteur
Reception Location: The Estate of Johns Lake
Wedding Cake: The Sugar Suite – Jennyfer Mancino
Floral: Betina Paul
Lighting: Tagas Event & Production Services
Linens: Over the Top Linens – Jennifer Welsh
Chiavari Chairs and Rentals: A Chair Affair
Photography: Hollywood Photo & Video – Juan/Jerrabel

The Spring 2013 Fashion Color Report: The Balancing Act

Fashion Week is here!  With the start of fashion week in New York comes one of my favorite reports: Pantone's Fashion Color Report for Spring 2013.  The theme for spring is The Balancing Act!  I personally love the theme as I realize many of us want to have balance and new ways to express ourselves.  The color palette has a mix of bright colors and neutrals.  Designers figured the mix of colors would provide versatility while being fashionable and practical.

Leatrice Eisman ( executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®) says that, “The expression ‘balancing act’ is something we all relate to as we strive to find harmony in the frantic pace of our everyday lives...The same can be said for fashion as we look for balance between light and bright, classic and new. This season’s color palette emphasizes this need for balance, while at the same time allowing for individuality, self-expression and excitement.”

Designers like Tracy Reese (aka, the diva that designed the beautiful dress the First Lady of the United States wore for her address at the Democratic National Convention) have used the palette for their spring inspiration. In our wedding world, this color palette serves as inspiration for many design houses as they create beautiful gowns, dresses and accessories for your wedding day.  Rest assured you will be seeing this palette represented in your favorite local magazine.

To download the full report, click here. Pantone would love to know which color is your favorite.  My favorite is African Violet (purple is my favorite color).  I could see it paired with Alloy beautifully!  Below is the CMYK mix to help you achieve the colors!

Real Wedding: Taryn & Spencer - Lake Mary Events Center

We loved Taryn and Spencer!  Their wedding was last spring at the Lake Mary Events Center.  They were a fun loving group and their friends and family were truly a pleasure to work with.   Taryn contacted us to handle the final details of her wedding plans.

Their day was captured by Kellie and her team at KWU Weddings. We asked Taryn to answer a few questions about the wedding.  See her insight into the wedding planning below:
1.       How did you meet?
We met in Atlanta at an event called PlayDate.  It's a monthly event that takes over a trendy spot with every game you can remember, a dance floor, a bar and lots of fun, relaxed people that are looking to let loose with friends or meet new people.  I was there to celebrate the end of the semester with a friend and we thought we'd try something new.  We liked the idea of it being an alternative to the club.  We felt like kids again, playing Spades, Wii, giant Jenga, and more.  But it was when I got to the Spoons table and ended up sitting next to a 6'2'' guy with a shy, gorgeous smile, that I felt myself really perk up.  In Spoons, it's similar to Poker, but when you get a good hand, you are supposed to grab a spoon from the center of the table.  The last person to grab a spoon finds themselves short and is out of the game.  Needless to say, at 5'3'', I was initially no match for Spencer, but after friendly banter and a healthy dose of competition, the rest is history.

2.       How did the groom propose?
Location: ATL Airport
He greeted me as I arrived in baggage claim. I remember that he had on his Stacy Adams and they were gleaming! I asked what he was doing inside. "Just came to carry your bags", he replied.

We began walking toward the remote parking lot and I started to ask questions. Where are we going and why? Spencer said, "just follow me". So I followed. When we walked outside, he led me to a bench and told me to sit down. I began to grumble and he told me to go along with the plan. When I looked up and noticed the sweat on his brow, I decided to comply.

He pulled out a piece of paper and began reading a poem he'd written:
"Love, you are an angel that fell from the sky
That's heaven sent, which caught my eye
You came down and made my life better
Through the tough times and stormy weather
I'm glad you came into my life
So I'm asking you on one knee to be my wife"
I kept saying "Are you serious?" and finally told him that he had the wrong hand! When he got it on, I stood up and said yes!

My shock wore off as we walked to the car and we both began to tear up. Wow!!

3.       What was the theme of your wedding?  Colors?  Why did you select them?
Our theme was based off the peacock and was all about celebrating in a fun, unique way with our family/friends.  We wanted them to truly enjoy themselves and experience a little bit of what made us special.    Our colors were peacock blue and clover green, selected because they were beautiful, vibrant and out of the ordinary.

4.       Why did you select Joie de Vie as your wedding day managment company?
After looking into several Wedding Coordinators and reading lots of reviews, we felt that we just clicked with Kerline and her team.  Kerline was easy to talk to, very helpful and felt like an old friend vs. someone who planned weddings for a living.  We couldn't be happier with our choice and can look back without recalling any hiccups in our wedding day.

5.       Favorite moments while planning  the wedding.

The pieces of wedding planning that we enjoyed the most were putting in all of the special touches that made the event so memorable for our us as well as our family/friends. The number one hit was finding and booking the PhotoMingle but other favorites included creating (and tasting) our signature drinks (Lee-tini and Spark-lee).

6.       In hindsight, how has having a planner been beneficial to you?
Having Kerline as a planner allowed me to not worry about everything I was supposed to be doing.  She notified me when there was something I needed to do, reminded me when deadlines were looming and stepped in when I needed someone else to run point.

7.       Any advice to make planning a simpler process for other couples?

Get started early, figure out what YOU want before you get friends/family involved and remember that the wedding is really about you and your husband-to-be, so whether you are spending someone else's money or your own, make sure that you choose wisely when to go over your budget, adhere to it, and keep in mind that all of the little extras that you just "have to have" aren't going to be the things that you remember most, so don't overshadow it by going into debt just to have your perfect princess moment. The husband/wife, the pictures and the small sentimental moments are what you will carry with you, not the food, flowers, or those _______ (insert frivolous item here) that you just have to have that will tack on an extra $1000 to your budget.

Daily Wedding Planning Tip: Applying For Your Marriage License

Applying for your marriage license is an important part of the wedding planning process.  Florida's rules are fairly simple.  Here is the gist of what you need to know:

  1. There is a three (3) day waiting period unless you have completed a licensed premarital course
  2. If you and your fiance have children together that were born in Florida,  you also have to complete an additional form called the  Affirmation of Children Born in Florida form (DH743A). The form has to be notarized.
  3. You and your fiance must apply together in person
  4. You each must show a valid driver's license, a valid state identification card, a valid passport or valid military identification
  5. Both parties must provide their Social Security numbers
  6. If either party has been previously married, the party must provide the date their last marriage ended
  7. The license is valid for 60 days
  8. You will pay a fee of $93.50 ($61 if you have completed a licensed premarital course)
Marriage licenses are issued by counties and you can apply for your license at any county clerk's office.  If you live in Orange County, you can use the  downloadable form from their site to save you some time when you go to their office.  We always recommend picking up the license before the last two weeks of planning; this ensures you don't forget to get it and you enjoy the days before your wedding entertaining any out of town guests.

Real Wedding: Bryan and Ashley - B Ocean Destination Wedding!

As an Orlando based wedding planner we have worked with many great professionals over the last seven years!  One of our local professionals, Bryan Taylor (Tagas Events), wed his college sweetheart in a beautiful destination wedding at the amazingly chic, B Ocean Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  We were honored when Bryan approached us to help them wrap up their final details and manage their wedding day.  Ashley is a really sweet person!  Their guests and bridal party had an awesome time!

The setting for their nuptials was the beautiful B Ocean Hotel!  I visited the B Ocean last fall and was thrilled to learn this was where their nuptial would take place.  With a palette of black, white and hot pink, Ashley and Bryan's wedding was off to a great start.  Truly personal and unique, this wedding had so many great moments.   Being it was the first day of hurricane season, in true Florida fashion, a storm came in; however, the rain cleared in time for our  ceremony set up (done in record time!) and we were able to stay outside.  Their wedding was featured yesterday on Tab McCausland Photography's blog!
