I've know Cheryl for a few years and I she is one of our great florists in the Central Florida area. Tell us a little about your business and the services you offer:
We are a full service floral design company, specializing in events and weddings. Attention to detail and service, service, service are the number one priority of our certified floral designers and staff. Established in 1995 Cheryl’s Distinctive Creations provides peace of mind, giving our clients confidence that the job will be done right. We have been a part of many award winning productions throughout the country and constantly strive to stay ahead of the curve in design trends through education, networking, and providing a broad range of services.

How did you get started in the Wedding Industry?
I left a job after nine (9) years having developed the floral design department of this company single handedly to strike out on my own and began wedding floral design at my in-home studio. Through word of mouth the business has grown steadily to the thriving sought after company that we are today.

What professional organizations or networking groups are you a member of?
ABC (Association of Bridal Consultants), NACE (National Association of Catering Executives), charter member of ISES Orlando (International Special Events Society), Central Florida Florists Association (CFFA – sit on the Board of Directors) and Florida State Florists Association (FSFA)

Furthest place and/or interesting place you’ve travelled to while working on a wedding assignment?
This summer we travelled to Hammock Dune (Palm Coast) for a wedding at this exclusive resort community. In 2006 we travelled to Paradise Island for a 6 day event at Atlantis Resort for a corporate event. We travel to Tampa on a regular basis for weddings and corporate events as well as Jacksonville, Palm Coast and South Florida.

What are a few suggestions you would make to couples as they are selecting a florist/floral designer for their wedding?

While price is always a high priority sometimes a low price on wedding quotations can come with a high price for the end result. I suggest that couples look for a certified designer who has longevity in the industry and can provide a consistent level of service to ensure there are no worries on your wedding day. Deal with a vendor that has been recommended by friends and/or colleagues that have provided good service and quality product.

What are a few trends and innovations you have seen in the industry?
“Traditional” weddings don’t really exist anymore, each couple should be able to get what reflects their desires and style for both ceremony and reception. There are so many new elemental products on the market these days to accomplish the trend of minimalist design for the hip, young and sophisticated couples of today such as rhinestones, crystals, diamantes, and wire just to name a few.

What are some of your favorite "reads" for all things floral?
I am an avid subscriber to industry magazines like Brides and Blooms, Flowers &, Fusion Flowers, Florists Review, and various bridal magazines.

If you weren't a working in this industry, what field would you be in instead? Why?
I think I would work as an interior designer. The creativity of putting together designs whether for the home or office through the use of colors, texture and other elements to marry a space with the client’s vision is a wide open door. Your success is directly measurable by the client’s satisfaction with the end product.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?
When I have a quiet moment and nothing else to do I love to draw and I’m a bit of a dare devil; i.e., sky diving.

When not working on a wedding, what are your favorite pastimes?
Rest and relaxation on the beach or a remote island, music and design.

Real Wedding: Leslie & Joe August 23, 2009

This is going to sound rather cliché but we truly love our brides and grooms. It is always an honor to work with the couples as they plan the details for their wedding day. In the 7 months of planning with this couple, it was truly a great time of learning about both of them, their love for one another and the close & wonderful relationship they have with their families. They wanted to ensure that the day reflected that love and hope they shared. From the onset the couple set a few rules for their engagement experience:

1. Their faith was very important. They are active in their church and wanted to make sure they had time to participate in premarital counseling, church activities and deepening their faith.

2. No wedding planning during the weekend. They wanted to keep their weekends to do 'couple' activities that would continue to build onto the foundation they were building for their marriage. I loved it! Joe is an avid jet skier, so there were many times I would hear of them heading off to the beach or the lake.

3. They wanted a wedding coordinator to help them focus on the important details and take care of the planning so that their day to day activities would be minimally effected by the wedding comes Joie de Vie!

Both Joe and Leslie are very busy professionals. Joe is a local attorney with his own firm and Leslie works for a leading engineering firm. They wanted us to help them focus on the details that would become a fun, memorable and romantic day. The ceremony and reception were held at the Rosen Plaza Hotel. Although heavy rain did not allow the opportunity to have any formal photos outside, the day was beautiful and everyone enjoyed themeselves. Here are a few photos from their photographer, Frank Figueroa of Franks Photography. The couple looked fabulous and the day was truly spectacular.

Details, details, details! I loved her shoes, and the Swarovski crystal jewelry. These lovely shoes have a 3.5" heel that the bride graciously wore the entire evening!

The couple exchanged vows under a simple yet beautiful chuppah. The beautiful florals, from Greenery Productions, was a great anchor for the ceremony altar. They incorporated a beautiful Hispanic tradition into their ceremony. Joe's aunts (who came in from Puerto Rico) presented the couple with a beautiful crystal and gold lasso from Puerto Rico. The lasso looked like a rosary and had two loops that could be placed over the couple. The lasso was placed over them as a sign of their true love and it also symbolized their uniting forever in a permanent and loving marriage.
I loved the fact that Leslie had each girl select a dress that fit their personality and style.

This cake! OH MY!! The bride's aunt gave her this cake as a wedding gift. Leslie's aunt is a cake baker that caters to the Hispanic community. She makes authentic Dominican Wedding cakes. Leslie and I visited her one evening design this beautiful cake. When we arrived at her home she was making sugar flowers, I was a fan instantly.

Leslie's stylist had her hair half up and down for the ceremony. For the reception with the removal of a few pins and moving her feather hairpiece up, Leslie had a new style.

How did you get started in the Wedding Industry?
I worked in the design and advertising field for 10 years and when I got engaged I went to look for invitations, and was really disappointed with what I found, as an artist an designer I felt I couldn't send out the plain, non- inspiring invitations I found in place after place, so I created my own invitation, which snowballed, and now 3 years later I have my own company full time helping brides realized their most creative invitation to set the tone for their event.

Any industry awards or recognition?
I've won a few advertising and design awards. I have a silver addy for a commerical I worked on early in my career with Sherman Hemsley (yep George Jefferson! from the Jefferson's).
Kerline: Ok! I nearly fell out of my seat on this one. I can imagine this experience was filled with laughter.

How far in advance should they contact your studio?
We tell our clients the custom design process takes between 13-16 weeks.. Invitations need to mail out 6-8 weeks before your event, (save the dates 6-8 months ahead). To make sure we create something that is unique to your wedding and style and tastes we say the design process takes about 2-3 weeks and the production process, depending on complexity of design, 3-5 weeks.
Kerline's comments: this time flies by quickly. As Amy mentioned, the production process is truly a complex one.

Before coming to see you, what do you recommend they consider for their stationery?
They should consider that invitation sets the tone for their event, it's the first piece of their amazing event that their guests will see. And it's the piece they will enjoy the longest. Most everything else is for day of, the invitation creates the buzz and the bride and groom get to hear the buzz for weeks leading up to their event..

What are a few trends and innovations you have seen in the industry?
Well I would say the biggest trend is that invitations aren't just limited to paper these days. They can be bottles, boxes, shapes and sizes, with live floral, crystals, etc. As you can imagine this is exciting to me, I would say the biggest trend for 2009 I noticed is Eggplant is a huge color and Lace and satin.

What is the process when the bride/groom works with you on their stationery order?
We start the process with a consultation. At this first consultation, you and I will sit down and go through some of the past wedding & event invitations created by The 2u Collection. Then we will go through our Bridal Questionnaire so that I can find out a bit more about you and your wedding. Learning about you and your wedding is the key to designing a unique and creative invitation with your style and flare.

If you decide a custom invitation is for you and would like us to design 2 concepts for your event, a $75.00 non-refundable deposit is required. This deposit will be applied to your contract balance if you choose a 2u Collection design to use as your wedding invitation, if you choose to use another invitation vendor, the deposit is used to cover the cost of supplies and time spent creating your 2 concepts. I

Then we present 2 concepts with 2 proposals. The bride chooses her favorite and we move onto stage 2 which is tweaking and developing the design further and creating an accompaniments (i.e. menus, programs, thank yous, escort cards, table numbers, etc)

What have been some unique ideas you’ve had the opportunity to create for a wedding?
I modeled an invitation after the brides dress, and it turned out beautiful, made from lace, silk flowers and embellished with Swarovski crystals. We also hung crystals from the centerpieces and worked the table numbers and stationery in that way.

Kerline's comments: All of 3 of these are a few of my favorites as well. Lisa was a great mentor to me when I first started my business.

If you weren't a working in this industry, what field would you be in instead? Why?
Well, I've been asked this before and everyone was quite shocked at my answers.. But I still will say it.. I would do something out doors, with animals, like camping and hiking/climbing expeditions or a zoo.. I'm a country farm girl at heart, and I love the outdoors.

What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I'm italian and I HATE cannollis and tiramisu.. I know, it's crazy.
Kerline's comments: Who doesn't like tiramisu?!?!?! I am still shocked by this.

Real Wedding: Gwenetta and Samuel - March 14, 2009

We will call this the year of the Rattler! Three of the Joie de Vie Weddings & Events Brides are also alumni of my precious Alma Mater, FAMU. Last summer we were introduced to our March 2009 bride by the florist. I met with Gwenetta and her mother, Mrs. Hayslip, at Cindy's Creations and I knew immediately that these two ladies had a handle on their 400 plus guest wedding. After our initial consultation Gwenetta's mother realized that Joie de Vie Weddings & Events, Inc. would be the team to handle the details for the big day. Coincidentally, the Kenard Lang Foundation had their annual fundraiser and one of the silent auction items was one of our planning packages at Joie de Vie. That opened the perfect opportunity for Gwenetta to support a worthy cause and obtain the planning services she would need.

In the month that Gwenetta and Samuel had been engaged they had made many important decisions in the wedding planning process. Gwenetta thought about every detail. Gwenetta and Sam were such sweethearts and they truly wanted to make sure that their guest would enjoy the day. Gwenetta's concerns were:
1. The ceremony would start ON TIME,
2. Everyone enjoy themselves, and
3. The logistics and timing with so many guests attending the wedding.

Fast forward to January 2009 and we were eight weeks away from the big day. The elements were in place for an unforgettable wedding day. The one thing I could truly say about the Hayslip ladies is that they were SUPER ORGANIZED. Mrs. Hayslip had a system down to track their RSVP's that could truly make any coordinator proud! With over 400 guests the ladies made sure that seating was taken care of. I remember sitting with the ladies and Sam's sister as we mapped out the seating for the reception. Gwenetta's parents helped to organize her escort cards and place cards which help to keep order for the 426 confirmed wedding guests. With 42 tables for the reception, an adult buffet dinner, a children's buffet and a nod to Sam's Guyanese heritage we were well on our way to a great evening.

Needless to say with 425 guests the thought or time to take quick snap shots with my little digital camera was null and void. Our staff was too busy to take any photos to share. We were happy when the photographer sent us a few of thephotos last week. Here are a few of the professional shots to showcase the day:

The bridal party was large. My favorite was absolutely the speedwagon that the groom painted himself. Gwenetta's 1 year old nephews were 'honorary ringbearers' and were rolled into the ceremony.
By the way, all of the guests attending the wedding were asked to wear black or silver. This was fun and really added to the formality of the festivities. For my staff it became interesting because everything was a sea of black and silver. It proved challenging when we were rounding up bridal party members and parents for introductions.

Sam and Gwenetta got a sneak peek of the room before the guests entered.

I don't think I've ever seen this many women gathered for a sorority serenade! Gwenetta is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Over thirty of Gwenetta's sorority sisters serenaded her with the Sweetheart Song and then the ladies strolled to "To Be Real".

Gwenetta and Sam gave every guest a wonderful momento to remember the day. Everyone received a 4x6 of their engagement photos, a great mint tin (there were some great mints in those tins) and a piece of traditional West Indian Black Cake.

Joie de Vie Weddings & Events believes it takes great professional vendors to truly pull an event together flawlessly. I truly have to commend the event team for their hard work and efforts. Our fabulous event team:

Cake: Cupcake Crazy When I first met Gwenetta, she had not found the right baker for her cake. I immediately sent her to Karen.

Thursday Travels! Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa

We have started a bi-monthly feature on the Joie de Vie Blog! Twice a month we will feature some of our great wedding venues in Central Florida. We will call this feature our Thursday Travels and it will give you an opportunity to see many of the great venues that you can host your wedding, social or corporate event at. Our goal is to give you a snippet of what your event can be at that particular location.

Our first featured venue is The Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa. This venue is still under construction (Opening December 2009), however, Jennifer Payne, the Catering Sales Manager invited us over to take a sneak peek. Last Wednesday, we travelled down to Clearwater for our visit. I went down with my colleague and 'gab' pal, Evelyn Duran. We met up with the ever fabulous Carrie Wildes to go on an excursion of sorts and visit the new Hyatt. With our hard hats and glasses (safety first!) we went on our tour. Three words to describe the new Hyatt Regency: FABULOUS, BREATHTAKING and MEMORABLE.

This is a view of the hotel as it is now under construction. It is amazing!

If cool, chic and a contemporary style describes you, this is your venue for your next event. They will be able to host intimate weddings on the beach as well as great events in their ballroom, or the many beautiful terraces on property. Jennifer and her staff are designing menus that everyone will be able to customize.

Here are a few facts you may find interesting:
• 250 guestroom suites, including 133 deluxe suites, 79 one-bedroom suites, 37 two-bedroom suites, 13 accessible rooms, and Presidential suite (1)

• Walk out balconies with Gulf of Mexico and sunset views

•The Outdoor space can be covered (YES An effective B Plan before you even need it!)

We can't wait for the grand opening in December. They have begun to book weddings and special events. Yes, the brides are booking based on what they've seen so far. The Hyatt Regency Clearwater beach is beautiful, swanky and super chic!

Tabitha has to be one of the funniest photographers in this industry. Her smile and personality are truly infections. As a Central Florida photographer she prides herself in truly capturing the best moments in life. One thing that sets Tabitha apart is her eye when it comes to shooting Boudoir Photography! Joie de Vie's additional commentary: The PPA is the world’s largest nonprofit association for professional photographers. You should always ask your professionals what organizations they participate in. The PPA sets a high standard for its members and also helps them increase their knowledge of trends and creative image making.

Furthest place and/or interesting place you’ve travelled to while working on a wedding assignment?

The craziest thing you’ve ever done to get “THE SHOT”?
Jumped into a water fountain.

What is your signature shot? In other words if someone saw a particular shot they would immediately relate it to your company.

What are a few suggestions you would make to couples as they are selecting a photographer/photojournalist for their wedding?
Pick someone you LIKE! Someone you get along with because you will be able to tell in the photos.

Your thoughts on ‘first look’ photos or bride and groom photos prior to the ceremony?
I am ok with it either way my theory is it is still the FIRST time you see each other!

Your thoughts on the importance of a coordinator in the vendor team dynamic?
A coordinator is a MUST!

Something you would like to see couples do more of with their wedding photography?
Give us more time! The rushed half hour after the ceremony is not enough time to make history!

Joie de Vie's additional commentary: when mapping out the wedding day itinerary, most coordinators will build in an hour for this - hence the cocktail hour.

What are a few trends and innovations you have seen in the industry?
LOVE Trash the Dress and I LOVE Boudoir as a gift for the future husband.
